Kimmel Pulls No Punches As He Ramps Up Battle With Trump

Jimmy Kimmel’s return to late-night television has reignited a fierce political and media storm. He was suspended over controversial remarks about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The fallout has exposed deep tensions between media freedom, political influence, and corporate pressure. It also raises questions that go far beyond entertainment.

A Monologue That Sparked a Firestorm

On September 15, during his opening monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel addressed the political reaction to Charlie Kirk’s murder. His remarks were direct and biting:

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

“This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend; this is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish, OK?”

These comments triggered immediate backlash. Both political figures and conservative media started condemning it.

Most importantly, two major ABC affiliate groups, Nexstar and Sinclair, pulled the show from their networks. Nexstar President Andrew Alford issued a statement:

“Mr. Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located.”

Trump Responds And Escalates

Trump Responds And Escalates

President Donald Trump celebrated the suspension and used his Truth Social platform to attack Kimmel and ABC:

“The ratings-challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible.”

Trump later threatened legal action against ABC after the network reinstated Kimmel:

“Why would they want someone back who does so poorly, who’s not funny, and who puts the Network in jeopardy by playing 99% positive Democrat GARBAGE. He is yet another arm of the DNC and, to the best of my knowledge, that would be a major Illegal Campaign Contribution.”

“I think we’re going to test ABC out on this. Let’s see how we do. Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 million. This one sounds even more lucrative. A true bunch of losers! Let Jimmy Kimmel rot in his bad Ratings.”

FCC Pressure and Free Speech Concerns

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr, appointed by Trump, added regulatory pressure:

“These companies can find ways to take action on Kimmel, or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

“This is a very, very serious issue right now for Disney. We can do this the easy way or the hard way.”

Carr’s comments raised serious alarms and questions across the media industry. People were divided into critics and supporters. The  Writers Guild of America condemned the suspension. Similarly, the SAG-AFTRA also termed it a violation of speech.

ABC’s Move and Kimmel’s Comeback

ABC initially announced that “Jimmy Kimmel Live will be pre-empted indefinitely.”

But after mounting public and industry pressure, including subscription cancellations and celebrity support, Disney reversed course. Kimmel returned to the air on September 23, opening with gratitude and defiance, stating that “I’m happy to be here tonight. It’s been overwhelming. I’ve heard from people all over the world over the last six days; everyone I have ever met has reached out.”

He also mocked Trump’s attacks by adding that “He’s like Dracula; he’s going to keep sucking the life out of us.”

The Bigger Picture

Nexstar and Sinclair’s decisions to drop Kimmel show how local broadcasters can override national programming. Means even the BBC owned the show, but affiliate power is more than enough to block it in their areas, especially when political pressure is involved.

Similarly, Carr’s threats came as Nexstar seeks FCC approval for a $6.2 billion merger. The timing suggests that these threats have been to pressure the network more deeply and strategically.

It also shows how audience impact can make or break a show. Despite Trump’s claims of poor ratings, Jimmy Kimmel Live! Remains one of ABC’s longest-running shows, with over 20 years on air. Viewer support surged after the suspension.

Trump’s claim that Kimmel’s reinstatement amounts to an “illegal campaign contribution” is legally untested and widely disputed by media law experts. However, legal experts argue that this claim lacks a clear legal basis.

This Isn’t Just A Spat Between A Comedian And A President

It’s a test of how far political influence can extend into the media. It is also examined whether satire still has the capacity to challenge power. Kimmel’s return marks a win for free speech, but it’s not the end. It will further reveal the hidden truths and strategies because the battle is far from over.
