MTV Shutting Down Music Channels: What To Know
The company started its career in 1981 as a music-only brand. It is now going to end all its music channels globally. However, MTV decided to further expand entertainment-focused channels. Paramount Global expressed its grief, stating that MTV is one that brought the most significant music moments to our screens and served us for over four decades. However, it’s now officially saying goodbye to us.
How Will The Shutdown Happen?
According to the Firstpost report on MTV’s shutdown announcement, “The broadcasting of MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live will cease after 31 December.”
As per the scheduled shutdown initial phase, the company will close all its UK and Ireland channels till 31 December. Then it will move to the network closure in Austria, Germany, Hungary, and Poland. Hoover, the full global phase-out will be completed by early 206. The channels being discontinued include:
- MTV Music, which is a general music video channel
- MTV 80s is a retro hits from the 1980s
- MTV 90s acts as nostalgic 1990s music
- Club MTV is a dance and electronic music
- MTV Live is a live performance and concerts
Why Is MTV Doing This?
The company now aims to streamline operations and emphasize digital-focused content. As user behavior changes and they focus more on reels and short-form content rather than watching television, the company will adjust its approach accordingly.
The company’s vision is to reduce its global operational cost and focus on shifting towards streaming services, just like Paramount. The company’s linear TV channels are becoming less profitable because users are now preferring TikTok and Spotify-like on-demand platforms.
The younger user’s behaviour is more spontaneous and impulsive; they can’t sit and wait to watch scheduled TV channels. Instead, they prefer to keep scrolling and choose short-form content according to their taste. That’s why all music channels’ ratings have steadily dropped over the past decade.
What Will Remain?
MTV HD channel will continue broadcasting in selective regions. However, they will only focus on pop culture, reality shows, and entertainment. The company will remain active on all social media platforms.
It is also rumored that the company may shift to festivals and events. The company may also choose influencer collaborations for fast growth in this fast-growing digital era.

“I am really sad, and I’m a little bit in disbelief, and I know it’s been a long time coming. We need to support these artists, and we all need to dance again and listen to music. And I know we do that online in our own little bubbles, but MTV was our shared space,” expressed Simone Angel.
In its 44 years of existence, the show started with “Video Killed the Radio Star.” The company went through multiple structural changes to adjust to the current audience’s needs. The company introduced iconic shows like:
- Total Request Live (TRL)
- MTV Unplugged
- Yo! MTV Raps
The company introduced the famous stars to the world, including:
- Madonna
- Michael Jackson
- Nirvana
- Beyoncé
Besides these, the company set new trends in fashion, music genres, and slang. It also defined youth culture multiple times from the 80s to the 2000s. Fans are considering this shutdown as the “end of an era”.
