Dr. Munmun De Choudhury emphasized that “AI can detect subtle changes in speech and language that may indicate depression or anxiety before clinical symptoms appear.”

As they have access to huge amounts of data, using NLP, they analyse the sufferer’s word choices and pacing, and they identify the emotional distress. They also build custom treatments based on the user’s clinical history and current behaviour.

Despite all these benefits, experts say AI is not dependable because it lacks empathy and emotions. It’s a tool that has never experienced what you are discussing with it. AI offers insights based on existing data and learning from previous interactions with different help seekers just like you. However, it doesn’t know how emotions work and the individual behavior differences of each. JMIR Mental Health stated that “AI-driven therapy cannot replicate the emotional attunement and embodied empathy that human therapists provide.”

It can’t offer you any non-verbal cues just like a human therapist. They fear that it’s a move to replace the genuine human interaction with robotic connection, which itself will lead to major mental disorders. Although AI doesn’t share your data with known parties, your data remains at risk due to large data breaches and companies’ access to it.

Robots work on formulaic patterns, so there is a high risk of errors due to technical faults. They can offer incorrect or harmful advice that is lethal, leading to death. You can use AI for mental health assistance for a quick and shorter time, but you can’t rely on it.
