Ronaldo’s Record: Built Over Two Decades

Cristiano Ronaldo accumulated 42 assists at Manchester United, Juventus, and Real Madrid. Ronaldo also has a track record of 140 goals in the Champions League tournament. No one has broken this track record till now.

The credit for his number of assists and goals goes to his consistency and longevity in the knockout rounds. Ronaldo dominated the European Cup’s toughest competition for years. He left behind unbreakable records.

De Bruyne’s Rise With Fewer Matches But Sharper Impact

De Bruyne’s Champions League journey began in the 2014–15 season. He got multiple injuries and squad rotations. However, despite all these challenges, he has steadily rocked the assist stage.

He got immense fame with his best single-season tally, achieved in the 2022–23 season. He helped Manchester City win their first Champions League title by registering six assists, which is rare.

However, in the following seasons, he was limited due to severe injuries and got just one assist in two campaigns. However, De Bruyne’s style remains unique.

As TNT Sports noted, “De Bruyne is known more for his creativity and goal setups than scoring himself.” His ability to unlock defenses with a single pass has made him indispensable to City’s European ambitions.

Expert Views: Vision Over Volume

Football analyst Jamie Carragher once said, “Kevin sees passes others don’t. He’s not just assisting, he’s designing goals.”

So he is not like traditional scorers; he sets the stage and designs how to play and win. While Ronaldo’s assists often came from wide positions or rebounds, De Bruyne’s are thoughtful and engineered.

In his assistance, everything seemed like a midfield with accuracy and timing. However, the Champions League allows a maximum of 13 matches per season. Given that, De Bruyne needs to gain an average of more than one assist per game. That’s rare, and to date, no player has managed to sustain a lead in the tournament.

As Planet Football notes, “Hitting double figures for assists in a Champions League campaign might not sound that difficult, but it is. In fact, it’s literally never been done.”

Record Or Not, Legacy Is Secure

De Bruyne is not an ordinary player. Regardless of the outcome, he will have a lasting impact. If the injuries stay away and City continue to play well and reach the’ end stages, he will definitely shatter the records.

According to UEFA’s ranking, it is confirmed that only a few players have crossed the 40-assist mark. But De Bruyne is the only active player in that chase, and fans are looking for him to shatter the records. A football writer, Miguel Delaney, states that “De Bruyne isn’t chasing records. He’s rewriting how midfielders are remembered.”
